Japanese BBQ eel style “Herring Donburi (with rice)"

Serving 2

  • Herring 6 fillets
  • 4 Tbs Flour
  • 2 Tbs Cooking oil
  • Mixed Sauce: 2 Tbs Soy sauce + 1 Tbs Sugar + 1 Tbs Vinegar + 1 Tbs MIRIN (Japanese sweet cooking rice wine)
GARNISH (if desired)
  • Shredded ginger or SUSHI ginger
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Fillet the herring. Remove the belly bones.
  • Coat the fish lightly with the flour.
  • In a small bowl mix the sauce ingredients.
  • Put some cooking oil in a medium heated frying pan, then place the coated fish the skin down to cook.
  • When the skin turns golden, turn it over, then cook the other side.
  • When the fish is almost cooked, add the mixed sauce into the frying pan, then simmer it until the sauce becomes thick and shiny.
  • Remove the pan from the heat, otherwise it will keep cooking and the sauce will disappear.
  • Put some cooked rice in a bowl, then drizzle some of the sauce from the pan on the rice.
  • Place the cooked herring on the rice and decorate with shredded or SUSHI ginger and touch of cayenne pepper. Enjoy!
