KNOTS: USE, TYPES, & EXAMPLES
Following info supplied by Members JimMacD, RonD, & BarryF, they are listed from reel to fly assuming fly fishing rig, knots are listed from most to least popular:
REEL TO BACKING
ARBOR KNOT
BACKING TO FLY LINE
ALBRIGHT KNOT
NAIL KNOT
FLY LINE TO LEADER OR TO SINKING TIP
PERFECTION LOOP KNOT: Tricky to tie but enables easy release after use. JimM doesn't like as breaks under stress thus uses a Clinch Knot: Animated Knots' How To (http://www.animatedknots.com/perfection/index.php)
LOOP TO LOOP KNOT: Animated Knots' How To (http://www.animatedknots.com/surgeonsloop/index.php#loop)
SURGEONS LOOP KNOT: Stronger than Perfection Loop, Animated Knots' How To (http://www.animatedknots.com/surgeonsloop/index.php)
CLINCH KNOT
BOWLINE KNOT
MONO LEADER TO MONO TIPPET
SURGEONS KNOT: To splice or add tippet material to a leader, Animated Knots' How To (http://www.animatedknots.com/surgeonsjoin/index.php).
DOUBLE SURGEONS KNOT: Stronger than Surgeons Knot.
NAIL KNOT: Tricky to tie, easier with a nail knot tool, but most elegant as results in small knot that can easily flow through fishing rod guides.
LOOPS: Don't use as not elegant and loop can get tangled, or caught in rod guide.
LEADER TO TIPPET
SURGEONS KNOT: To splice or add tippet material to a leader, Animated Knots' How To (http://www.animatedknots.com/surgeonsjoin/index.php).
TIPPET TO FLY
NON SLIP MONO KNOT: Animated Knots' How To (http://www.animatedknots.com/nonslipmono/index.php)
CLINCH KNOT
IMPROVED CLINCH KNOT: 5 turns are adequate for 4 pound test leader, Animated Knots' How To (http://www.animatedknots.com/improvedclinch/index.php)
MONO LOOP KNOT/LEFTY KREH LOOP KNOT: Used to connect a fly to leader with a loop connection, to allow the fly to move freely. 5 turns are adequate for 4 pound test leader.
