FLY FISHING - SINKING TIPS
GENERAL
- Used at end of floating fly line before leader/tippet to get fly down into water (vs weights or a full sinking line), examples are deep lake fishing for trout, salmon fishing in streams, beach fishing for salmon.
- Sinking tip lines are linear density not tapered, normally rated by length and sinking speeds in inches-per-second, examples 9ft x 3 IPS.
- Can buy pre-made, ie from Rio, or make own from bulk reels of sinking fly line line material (can buy bulk from ie Tyee Marine in Campbell River).
- Rio bulk material available in T11 7-8 ips green, T14 8-9 ips blue, T17 9-10 ips grey, T20 14+ ips black.
HISTORY20200725 DennisG says his favourite sinking tip for Sooke River is short 24-27" heaviest T20 material, so that when retrieve, don't hit bottom.
20200722 JohnP gets Campbell River Tyee Marine store to make T17 heavy sinking tip with glue and shrink-wrapped loops at end. Recommended length for Campbell River was 1.5m.
