Golden Rods and Reels Fishing and Social Club

Meeting Minutes: Apr 21, 2020

Place: Virtual Zoom meeting.

Chaired By: Sandy McElroy

Secretary: Ron Duncan

Called to Order: 9:30am

Attendance: 21 Members, no guests

Minutes of Last Meeting: Not available

Items Arising from the Minutes:
1. Sandy asked for suggestions of how we might do business in this new reality.
2. Barry has picked up our material from Silver Threads and will store it temporarily. Executive must meet and discuss what we do to deal with this material, much of which is ancient.
3. An executive meeting may be arranged for 8:30 am next Tuesday: to be confirmed.

Treasurer (JohnF): Report next week. John imformed us that he is still waiting for an invoice from BCWF for the current dues.  President Dave will talk with Silver Threads about a possible rent deferral since our revenue has been curtailed. It was suggested that members consider a weekly donation to offset our reduced revenue from coffee.

Sunshine: Art R still in hospital, it was suggested that individual cards of support be sent to Sandy. John G is doing OK

Social: Plans on hold at this time.

Membership: No update.

Freshwater (RonD):
1. Lev fished Durrance and fed the eagle. It was very busy on the lake with lots of boaters  paddle boarders etc, He did catch fish and the stomach was full of snails.
2. BrianP on Durrance Lake and Prospect with few fish caught.
3. Many club members fished Prospect on Thursday with some success, see Ron D report on Chat
4. Langford Lake extremely busy and noisy, with many fishing chironomids
5. Dennis fished Elk Lake with Wee Tad on downrigger at 18 ft. Water was murky and full of algae. He caught a few good fish.
6. Sandy caught 4 nice fish on Prospect using AP emerger and Hares Ear nymph on a camo line. Marked many fish deep off the island
7. Bill informed us about a fisher who was fined $175 because the two people in the boat were not living at the same address, therefore were not considered to be socially isolating.

Salt Water (RyanA absent):
2020-04-18 John P soaked crab trap overnight in Portage Inlet one male dungeness but undersize, then soaked 1 hr in Oak Bay from shore, for 1 hr, nothing.
2020-04-16 JohnP soaked crab trap at Ship Point Wharf in DT Victoria, 1 large legal Red Rock.

Fly Tying: Dave R – via Zoom worked well on Saturday, KLinkhammer fly to be demonstrated on Sat.

ACS: No news

Library (Colin): If you want a book, contact Colin and he will arrange for you to pick it up.

Legacy Fund: No news.

Gillie Club (DennisG): Refunds received for campsite booking.

Fund Raising (SandyM): Appication submitted to Thrifty's Smile Card program for $2000 to help fund Elk Lake dock.

Speaker: At 10 am next week we will have a speaker giving a talk on Vancouver Island Butterflies. The following week the topic is Climate Challenge, and the following week it will be the Challenge of Volunteering. Appreciation was expressed to Bob for arranging these speakers.

Hatchery (BillT): Volunteers down but still managing. Ponded Chinook and Chum. 5000 clipped Coho released. Chum will be released soon. Mike C reported on 20 yr old sperm used to successfully hatch and release salmon.

Environment (Mick, absent): Chat emailed out separate report.

Website (JohnP): Lots of info available on the Forum section of the website.

New Business:
1. Wanted - Bill T looking for small 8ft boat trailer
2. Dennis has two belly boats donated to the club to sell. Make him an offer.
