GOLDEN RODS AND REELS - WEEKLY MEETING MINUTES
January 26, 2021

SECRETARY (Vacant): JohnP, Acting.

LOCATION: Zoom Videoconference.

ATTENDANCE: 23 Members, 0 Guest.

CONVENED: 9:28 am.

MINUTES: Adopted from Jan 19, 2020.

ITEMS ARISING FROM MINUTES: None.

MEMBERSHIP (JohnF): 50 Memberships of all types. Motion that Art & Sandy Raven become Honourary Members due to all the service to club, motion passed.

SUNSHINE REPORT (Wendy Gedney & Pat Psaila): Discussion.

TREASURER'S REPORT (JohnF): No update.

SOCIAL (BobC & BillT):
1) No update.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORTS (RonD):
1) BarryF & DaleS: Durrance Lake last Friday, surface water at 41F, no rises.
2) RonD: Someone mentioned that Lake Cowichan Blue Winged Olive fly hatching. RonE says thinks moving water fly, not still water, probably Chironomid hatch on Cow Lake.
3) BillT: Dave at Robinson's recommended Pumpkin Head wet fly for Thetis Lake.

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS:
1) RyanA: Victoria Brotchie Ledge (just off Ogden Point breakwater) 13 lb hatchery salmon on spoon.
2) RonD & BobC: On water Saturday, no fish.
3) KenE: Talked to person at Craigflower Bridge who caught several herring. RonE said that when young lots of herring, now collapsed, along with Chinook size due to current poor diet. MikeC said still has wooden Herring Rake, with lots of needles, find school and impale herring from boat.

AMALGAMATED CONSERVATION SOCIETY (BillT): No meeting this month.

VOLUNTEERING (BillT):
1) BillT: Hatchery gave 100 eggs to over 94 schools.
2) BillT: Beach Sand Lance egg survey still ongoing.
3) BillT: Collecting flies for Peninsula Streams' auction.

FLY TYING MEETING (DaveR): Next Saturday, couple simple flies, dry Henry's Lake Renegade fly, and traditional English wet Black Pennell fly.

CONSERVATION REPORT (MickC): World Fisheries Trust / Peninsula Streams will receive BC Govt funds, motion to release GRR's prior funding commitments of $1000x2 to them for Watershed Restoration. Motion carried.

LIBRARY REPORT (ColinC): JimM to add non-fishing book on The Gorge to Library.

GILLIE REPORT (DennisG):
1) DennisG: people used to soak their herring bait in Mrs Stewarts Liquid Bluing,
2) RonD: BC Interior's Peter Hope Lake, will send out plans, plan to go week before May long weekend, campground crowded.
3) DavidC: BC Interior's Roche Lake Resort responded, leaning towards long term rentals so may not be good.
4) WynnP: Vancouver Island's Poet Nook Aug 28 - Sep.

SPEAKER PROGRAM (BobC): Jan 26: Protecting Mother Ocean (Dwight Owens), Feb 9: Conspiracy Thinking (Dr Simon Several), Feb 16: Boosting & Maintaining Brain Power As Grow Older (Dr David ??), Feb 23: Quadra Island Lone Wolf, others in work. Will add more.

LEGACY FUND (BarryF): Nothing new to report.

FUND RAISING: Auction (BarryF): Still receiving material for next auction until end January.
