GOLDEN RODS AND REELS - WEEKLY MEETING MINUTES
April 27, 2021

SECRETARY (Vacant): JohnP, Acting.

LOCATION: Zoom Videoconference.

ATTENDANCE: 23 Members, 1 Guest RichardB.

CONVENED: 9:28 am.

SOCIAL (BobC & BillT): Nothing planned.

MEMBERSHIP (JohnF): No changes.

TREASURER'S REPORT (JohnF): No report, paid BCWF annual fee $1367.

FUND RAISING:
1) JohnF: Selling GRR badged fly boxes, see Chat Email.
2) JimM: Possible bottle drive, discussed recent PSS bottle drive, agreed discuss after Covid times.
3) SandyM: Fairway rebate to GRR Cards still available, Thrifty's rebate to GRR still on for May. Discussed bulk buying Thrifty's Cards.

VOLUNTEERING:
1) BCWF (BillT): Attended 8hr AGM last weekend, over 100 voting reps, well run. Voted in new Board, agreed Resolution removing word Recreation and using word Resident from Fisher, Hunter, Forager etc (as many Members doing it for food on table, not for recreation), agreed Resolution to increase dues declined, President is now Chuck Zimmerman. One question raised how can BCWF help Fly Fishing as imbalance between Hunters and Fishers. All directors and committee positions are volunteer, office positions are paid. Large Budget, updated Governance.
2) Peninsula Streams Society (BillT): AGM by Zoom on May 29, 2021, have to be a member/join to attend, 5 PSS Board Positions available.
3) BC Society's Act  (BillT): Requires Exec to sign forum that no criminal conviction in last 5 years.
4) Goldstream Hatchery (BillT & TonyO): Ponded (moving from hatching trays into larger green tanks) chum to be released in May. Creek temperatures are now above 10C and eggs hatching.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORTS (RonD):
1) BillT: Thursday on Prospect Lake landed 15" Rainbow. Also at Durrance Lake and trouble with Bald Eagle.
2) DaveC: On Durrance Lake yesterday, did well.
3) Sandy: On Durrance Lake last Wednesday with Lev, Eagle trying to take, yesterday on Prospect Lake did well primarily with Pumpkin Head.
4) DaveR: At Cowichan River, second run downstream from Cowichan Lake, big Mayfly and Caddis hatches on, both hooked 18# Brown but didn't land.
5) WinstonJ: Thursday on Prospect Lake with Pontoon Boat, many hits but losing many as rod in rod holders. Solution is dig oars in hard to set the hook, or hard kick if using fins. Also could try configure rod holders so that tip in water and less flex in line.
6) BrianP: On Prospect Lake yesterday, landed six rainbow trolling range of flies on full and medium sink.
7) Lev: Last Thudrday on Prospect Lake using Pumpkin head, many fish one 18".
8 ) BobC: On Prospect Lake yesterday, landed many 12-14" trout trolling Pumpkin Head.
9) DaveC & RonE: On Durrance Lake yesterday, landed many on Emerger and Dry Flies.
10) DennisG: Used to fish Elk-Beaver Lake 2-3x per week, no longer as no fish.

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS:
1) BobC & SandyM: Last Saturday Halibut fishing at Constance Bank & Albert Head, no hookup, not even dogfish, lost gear snagged on bottom.

CONSERVATION (MickC): Last Wed attended Gorge Waterway Initiative meeting run by CRD, discussion on Salmon Safe BC on how to build in salmon environments, and BEES discussion on removing big lumber from small creeks. World Fisheries Trust and Peninsula Streams 4 Interns started work. CRD meeting tonight on huge federal Govt tree planting budget. Discussion on Elk-Beaver Lake boat launch boat washing and invasive species. Elk-Beaver Lake initiative fund of $0.5 mln was spent by CRD ov er 4 years by 2020, working on further funding.

1) Mid May Buttle Lake (DennisG): Separate email discussion.
2) Late May Peter Hope Cabin (DaveC): Cancelled as not allowed to travel.
3) End July-August Cluxuwe FishOut (DennisG): No news from campsite to confirm bookings.

LIBRARY REPORT (ColinC): Discussion on UV in fresh and salt water.

GILLIE REPORT (DennisG): Personally have changed front trailer wheel to larger wheel so easier to pull.

FLY TYING MEETING (DaveR): Next Saturday Davie McFail pattern.

AMALGAMATED CONSERVATION SOCIETY (BillT): No update.

SUNSHINE REPORT (WendyG & PatP): Discussion.

WEBSITE (JohnP): Uploaded latest Member Contact List and last Saturday's Fly Tying videos to our GRR YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqjxJAQqRC841Pm5tnc-2Pw). Still have bug in accessing GRR Contact List.

LEGACY FUND (BarryF): No new requests.

NEW BUSINESS
1) Travel Restrictions: Discussed May GRR Buttle Lake Fishout.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday May 4, 2021 via Zoom.
