Minutes of the Regular Meeting

February 8-2022

Dave Cooke opened the meeting at 9:30am

The minutes were accepted as read.

Membership:

Treasurer:  Bank balances
Chequing  $11,682
Elk Lake   $1622
Legacy Fund: $5757

Sunshine: No news

Social: 10 people attended the Chinese Dim Sum Luncheon. It was a very successful event. St Patrick's day celebration to be announced       

Fresh Water: Tony fished Durrance, lots of ice and no hits
Some fisherman was seen on Admirals bridge fishing for herring.

Saltwater: Sandy fished near Lasqueeti Island for prawns and crabs with no luck. He reported that near French Creek salmon fishing was good.
Clover Point has been fishing well with some nice size winter springs being caught.

Fly tying: This week it will be a bucktail fly demonstrated, Dave C will demonstrate. A request was made that when demonstrating the fly to describe the target species. It was pointed out that Dave R does this during his demonstration

Legacy:  Executive at their meting will discuss use of funds.

Ghillie: Dennis recommended that Long Beach Casting Club is an informative website
Bob Marriot Fly fishing store in Long Beach California is a great website, one can purchase supplies from this site.
If salmon in the river are fresh from the sea they will respond to a blue fly because their eyes have not transitioned to seeing predominantly reds and yellows.

Fund Raising:

Hatchery:  No much happening, There was a drop off in Mary Lake on Mill Stream of 5000 Coho. Lots of clean up going on at the hatchery, 3000 chum eggs were placed in Bowker Creek
Sea lance eggs were found on Esquimalt Beach
Prior Lake near Thetis Lake had a stocking of coho??
A volunteer will conduct research on the effect of introducing a predator into the rearing tanks using cutthroat or to see how fish in the tank react. The goal is to assist smolts to become aware of predators and thus to improve their survival rate when introduced to the ocean. Qualicum hatchery did a successful program a few years ago.
