Goldstream Creek Social soup get together was 28 members plus 8 guests. Great soups. Several new and older members commented on how good the variety and quality of the soups were. 

Treasurer Sandy Raven: Presented 2023 budget for approval. It was moved by Sandy Raven seconded by Sandy McElroy. Sandy Raven presented a proposed budget for 2024 and this was seconded by Dale. Go on line for details.

Sunshine Wendy Gedney: Winky, a member of Haig Brown is in hospital with a serious lung issue.

Social Bob, Mike: Fish out at Prospect lake Tomorrow. Hot dogs at 12:00 noon.

Fresh Water:
Sandy McElroy needs a volunteer to help with pricing Ron Duncan's fishing gear.
New fly boxes $10.00, this is good deal. See Mike or Bill.
Dale: Previous two weeks were excellent for fishing Prospect Lake. Dale was out yesterday and the fishing has slowed down. There is algae bloom on. Cold water slowing down could be a factor in the bite being off. He did catch 18'' rainbow which was thin in body size. 
Jim and Gerry: Had good luck on Prospect Lake using a Cowichan spoon with a wedding band, caught an 18" Rainbow.
Tony: Fished Prospect caught 3 with lots of hits. There was a Damsel fly hatch. They could not find a matching fly for the Damsel fly.
Tim: Fished Cowichan River south of Skutz Falls. Could not get his egg pattern down. Caught small rainbow and brown.
Bob and Dave Larson: Fished Cowichan River with egg Pattern and no luck. Fishers on river boats reported good fishing further North on the river.

Salt Water: All quiet on the Ocean.

FishOuts: Fish out tomorrow at Prospect Lake. Hot Dogs served at 12:00pm. 

Fly Tying: Email out Thursday or Friday for fly tying this Saturday.

Hatchery: Chum and Coho run have ended. Coho runs have been good on island except the Gold stream. Poor chum return. Fence is being taken out tomorrow. Final day tomorrow for stream walkers count. We have enough chum eggs for schools only. 2,000 pit tags in coho Thursday. First pit tag was from Washinton state. Egg takes. If you would like to see an egg take be at the hatchery gate 8:30 this  Friday and Saturday. Go past Campground main entrance, just past old Ma Millers pub.

In December Mick is participating in a meeting with CRD regarding monitoring of water quality once the Elk Lake oxygenation equipment is functioning. He will also be attending the Dec lst. meeting of the Elk /Beaver Lake users advisory committee as the club's representative. The 27 acres former Royal Oak golf course will be preserved as a CRD Park most of which is in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
Discussions are ongoing with Provincial and CRD representatives for proposed water balance modelling for Craigflower and Colquitz watersheds including updating the existing model for Elk / Beaver Lake itself. Phone landline 250-598-3294

Annual general meeting is to held next Tuesday, where a new budget will be brought forward.

Motion by Sandy Raven to drop Directors insurance of $135.00 for additional three million. Gerry Walsh looked the contract over and in his opinion it was not worth having for our purposes. The motion was carried.

Dale: Fish are biting good on Prospect Lake. New fly he was using caught 50 plus fish. Some were over 16". Chironomids fishing good as well.
Tom was at Prospect Lake. He was proud to have caught an 18" cutthroat near the  observatory and the island. He Also landed a 16" and 17" rainbow on a pink bunny leach.

Hatchery: Coho finished and we have enough eggs. Chum was 1900 chum counted so far which is way down from last year. DFO predicted 20,000.

PSS: Pit tagging smolts in December. Camera in Millstream counted 68 good size Coho

Lyle Freeman gave a very entertaining and informative talk on his experiences as a fishery's patrol officer. He also had a good display up for members to look at.

Environment: Bill put forward proposal to send letter to DFO on herring fishing. (1) No Commercial fishing just Native (2) 10% Commercial full Native, (3)  %20 Commercial full Native. Option one was decided on.  Go to  Bill's email for addresses to send letters objecting to the  herring fishery.

Treasurer Sandy Raven: Complete treasurer report to come. Sandy put forward a motion to cancel $135.00 for 3 million directors insurance. Several members voiced concern over canceling it and would like to see what the policy covers. It was decided to carry the motion over to the next meeting.

Social Bob, Mike: Soup social event next Wednesday Nov. 15 Goldstream Park at covered picnic area Bob, Andre, Lee, Jim, Sandy will be Bringing soup. All others please bring Appy's Please bring your own drinks. Barry  will be providing 2 thermoses of coffee. Bring your own Cutlery chairs. Soup is on at 11:00am. Parking is always tight at this time of year. If you have some firwood please bring.

Fresh Water:
1) Dale Sunday. Langford lake landed 12, all were small. They were nice healthy-looking fish. He used Tom Thumb and Bunny leach. North end of lake. Lots of boats on the lake.
2) 100 mike house kokanee fishers. A spinning glow plug is the hot lure for kokanee.
3) Tom Witoski was at Thetis Lake and caught 8 trout all small but good fishing, he was on the main part of lake. Launched at main beach. He fished shallow used natural bunny leach.
4) If you are going fishing in any of the local lakes please post on the chat line, it might inspire others to go out and join you.

FishOut at Prospect Lake Nov. 22. Hot dog swill be served at 12:00pm 3,000 new fish have been put into the lake.

Thank you to Dave Robinson for excellent fly casting seminar. 10 people present. Will do another one in spring. Fly tying this Saturday for the Spruce Fly. If anyone has family memories of those who have served for Canadian Forces we will share at 9:00am.  Fly tying 10:00am.

Hatchery: Grant picked up 80 Coho and with some from the Shawnigan lake run , The hatchery has104 in tank. The stream walkers twice a week walk the river to count fish. DFO projected 10,000 counters have counted 1,000.  Chum eggs go to schools to raise. last year the hatchery released 300,000 smolts into Goldstream Stream

PSS: Donated money helped pay for two to four thousand pit tagged Coho for Craigflower stream. Hatchery may be putting 3-7 thousand into Millstream. 61 coho were counted going through Millstream camera. Failure in camera so it might be undercounted. The camera has background squares to tell how big the fish is. Fish ladder #4 is where the highest number of fish carcases are spotted. Fish ladder # five has an impediment. The  plan is  to put in a  weir or a 2 step ladder. No fish above culvert. New smell of cement might have affected fish. 20,000 smolts were released above culvert.

Pit tag device is the size of a grain of rice. A needle inserted into the abdomen of the smolt. 2,000 last year, 2 died. The tag Activates a device when they swim past. Each pit tag is numbered. People check rookeries and killer wale scatt for pit tags.   

BCWF: Dave Cooke moved into new house in Campbell River.

ACS: Revised minutes sent out. Sports Fishery Advisory meeting. One motion put forward was to ask DFO to extend clipped salmon season to June 1.

WFA: 

Library: Ron Duncan's books are free on table. Tuesday fish equipment sale on weekend in new year. First sale on Tuesday so members can have first choice. The general sale will be on a Saturday.

Gillie Club: Dennis has decided to not continue with Cluxue fishing. He  will go to Campbell River from now on. He is looking for advice on times and places to stay.
Lake Cowichan fishing. Big cutthroat at mouth of streams. Use worms. Home made lures for cutthroat. 60- 70 feet in 300ft of water.

Sunshine Wendy Gedney: Celebration of life for Ron Duncan was well attended. 

Social Bob, Mike: Goldstream club outing Nov. 15th 11:00am. Soup volunteers are Bob, Andre, Jim, Lee, and John Pierce. All others bring an Appy to share. Anyone with firewood please bring. Dress for cold weather. Bring chairs, own bowls, plates, and cutlery. Parking is always tight there so car pool if you can or show up early.

Fresh Water: Barry out at river. Few fish on river. Dale caught six and he thinks run is over. Tim was out twice landed three near clay Banks Dennis caught 15.  There were lots of seals. Fish were recently put into Durance and Elk lake. Ron's boat is still for sell $600.00 boat, electric motor, and depth sounder. Sandy will be selling Ron's flytying supplies in January.  Half proceeds to club. It was suggested that we could have a general sale of other member's un wanted fishing gear as well

Salmon Fishing: Coho season appears to be over. With more rain coming there might another run. Winter Springs are not here yet

FishOuts: Nov. 22 Prospect lake. Hot dogs will be provided. Serve at noon. $5.00 donation. Bring you own beverage.

Fly Tying:  Fly casting lesson this Thursday. 2:00pm. At Hamsterly beach. Elk lake. Bring fly rod with floating line an leader, no fly ,bring protective eywear. Approx. 2hours.

Hatchery: This Sat. the hatchery will be taking fish from the fence in Goldstream at 10:00am. If you would like to watch go through the park gate at Ma Millers pub and stop at yellow barrier. Walk down the trail to the creek.
DFO initially reported we cannot take brood stock from Shawnigan Lake until it was pointed out to them that it was through the local initiative that there are any salmon in Shawnigan at all  and they reversed their decision.

PSS: Smolts going into into Goldstream will be pit tagged and the returns will be monitored.

Called to Order: 9:30 AM. One minute of silence was held in memory of Ron Duncan. Ron had been a member of the club for 12 years. Her held the position of president and secretary. He was a proficient angler in salt and fresh water. He encouraged new members in fly fishing. Ron would also be the hot dog man at our fish outs at Durrance Lake. I personally have spent many an hour with Ron in the back of my boat fishing for salmon off the waterfront and Becher Bay. We rarely got skunked. He always had a tale to tell, a song to sing, and his favorite line was "fish on! ". I surely will miss him. There will be a celebration of life at Spinnakers this Thursday 2:00pm to 4:00 pm. Contact Sandy McElroy if you are attending. Sandy is selling Ron's boat. It is approx. 8ft. comes with electric motor and depth sounder. It is ideal for the local lakes. It's a good deal. Sandy will also be bringing in Ron's fishing gear to the club for sale. Ron asked that half the proceeds go to the club and the other to his family.

Fresh Water: Barry Sooke river. Two trips out, four Chum caught on first day 10 or 12 on second outing. Turn right onto Shamrock road to the new housing development. You will probably see other vehicles parked by side of the road. Take the path down to the river. Follow path by the river. Best fishing has been by clay banks. Bill Thomas  is going this Wednesday if interested in joining up. He can give you some tips. Go to the club's u tube sight Oct 8th for Sooke river flies and how to rig up for fish. Sandy gave special mention to Jim McDonald for teaching people how to fish the Sooke River. Jim Demonstrated how to use a bent coat hanger to release the fish. Remember it is catch and release. Bring needle nose pliers to release the fish. 

Salt Water: Tony mentioned he heard from people Coho fishing off Island View beach at Cowichan Point with some success.

FishOuts:  Successful, hot dogs provided. Next date for fish out will be 22nd November, Prospect Lake Hot dogs at noon. 15 people were at the fish out last Wednesday at Durance Lake.  Most people caught fish. Chris caught 4. Hot dogs were good as usual.

Fly Tying: Florin will be demonstrating fly tying. This Sat 9:00 am Dave talked about fly fishing Campbell River using coho fly's. He will demonstrate these flies at future date. These sessions are good for beginner and experienced as well. Go to website and click on link. Dave will send out info on fly casting seminar. Nov. 2nd bring rod with leader, no fly's and bring eye protection. 2:00pm at Hamsterly beach.

Hatchery: Fence is in and we should be collecting fish this Thursday. Still clipping.

PSS: Millstream Oct 17 camera counted 19 coho salmon pass by camera. Big fish 18-20 inch. Colquitz river is too low for Coho at this time . 

BCWF: Any issues members have in DFO or any other matter give them to Bill Thomas and he will forward them off to BCWF.

Fund Raising: Use your Fairway card. Mike mentioned 12 aluminum foot being donated to the club  to raffle. It retails for $4500. Lottery license required might be required. Raffle off last day at outdoor show. Mike will check out what is required for license. This would involve members selling tickets, majority of members raised their hands in support of the venture.

Environment: Mick talked about the three page report sent to Dan Ciobotaru, BC Govt Regional Hydrologist, that Yogi Carolsfeld and Mick prepared. The report documents the request for BC Govt staff to update Elk/Beaver Lake water balance model and using a water balance approach, to prepare hydrological assessments of both Colquitz and Craigflower watersheds. The report stems from two online meetings that Mick organized that were attended by BC, CRD and stewardship group representatives. This summer's drought and the previous atmospheric river underscore the importance of improved hydrological data.

On Thursday October 26 Mick is participating with the BEES in a review of Elk/Beaver Lake monitoring program, hosted by CRD staff. He has taken the opportunity to remind Saanich staff of commitments to implementation of land use measures to reduce external nutrients to Elk/Beaver Lake through his involvement in the work of Resilient Saanich Technical Committee and the update of Saanich Development Permit Areas (DPA). Dave Cooke made special mention of Micks continued contribution to the club's work on environment issue

Sunshine: A Celebration of Life will be held for Ron Duncan on Thursday October 26, 2023. The event will be at Spinnakers (308 Catherine St.) from 2:00-4:00 PM.
Social:
-   West Coast Fly Fishers held a hot dog BBQ and fish out on the Sooke river. Several GR&R members attended and had a great time

Gillie Club: No Report- Dennis is out fishing today

Fund Raising:
-   The club is no longer participating in the Smile Card program at Thrifty's. The program is missed as it brought in a lot of funds to the club.
-   The club is now promoting the Fairway Market Community Shopping card.  Please see Sandy R. for a card if you are interested in participating.

Freshwater Fishing:
-   Colin, Bill, and Christopher had a great time catching chum on the Sooke
-   Andre went to Ferry Lake via a jet boat that he was very impressed, saw lots of Cohos

Saltwater Fishing: Things have quieted done now until about the end of January

Fly Casting: Dave Robertson will be giving a casting lesson at Elk Lake on Thursday November 2 at 2:00 PM.

Speaker Program: Lyle Freeman a club member who had a career as a Fisheries Officer

Hatchery Program: The fence is in, and broad stock are now being collected. Last year we had floods that greatly impacted the collection and as a result, we needed to use a backhoe to takeout the fence as it was buried in gravel.

BCWF: Any club issues should be reported through the club president to the Region One BCWF President Doug Bancroft

Library: The club library is closing due to a lack of interest. The remaining books will be donated to the upcoming Haig Brown Book Sale.
