Minutes of the Regular Meeting

January 18, 2021

Dave Cooke opened the meeting at 9:30am

The minutes from last week were accepted

Membership: No report

Treasurer: No report

Sunshine: Chris is doing well

Social: No decision yet about the Chinese New Year luncheon.  Jade Fountain Restaurant is the location. Bob will send an email requesting a response from those who wish to attend

Fresh Water:
1) Dale went to Durrance on Friday but fishing was not possible because of ice.
2) Bill observed four teens carrying trout along the road at Prospect Lake.
3) A spring fishout is being planned

Saltwater: Bob and Ron had no luck but fish were being caught in Sooke and the Bedfords.

Fly Tying: Saturday fly will be a demonstration of the Doc Spratley, more details will follow later this week.

Legacy: Recommendation was accepted by the membership from the Legacy committee to disband and turn the decision making over to the Executive.  Four requests are pending for decision. The executive will decide at their next meeting.

Gillie:

Fund Raising:

Hatchery: Not much going on at Hatchery. Eggs eying up and being shocked by being dumped from one bucket to another. This causes weak eggs to die. Clipped 1200 fish last week. The school program is a go with 87 schools participating and receiving 100 eggs each. The survival rate is good in the schools. Elvin are released in water near the school.

The Nature Hut at Goldstream is closed due to a lack of funds. No money from the Government. Funds must be from the private sector, which is suffering from the economic downturn. Most staff are volunteers.  It's a very worthwhile project and fits closely with the original concept of use of money in the legacy fund. Discussion was held about whether the club would donate some money. Bill will bring more information for the next meeting.

Environment: PSS auction Feb 26th. Boxes of Flies will be donated from the club.

Speaker: Dr. John Archibald presenting The Evolution of Human Language

Future speakers: January 25th = Fighting Fire with Fire: Controlled Burning in the American West, Ms Lauren Burton. Feb. 1 = The thinking Garden: A Film About an inspiring South African Women's Farm, Dr. Elizabeth Vibert

ACS: No report

New Business:
1) New meeting location discussion.
2) John has a recommendation to purchase a stair lift for $1500, which would be in lieu of rent.
3) Recommendation from John that we take the offer from Esquimalt Anglers. A Motion was put on the floor.  "To proceed with purchase of the stair lift and arrange its installation and move the meetings Esquimalt". Motion carried: For 21 against 0.
Note: Silver Threads has no parking, no storage, small room.
Note #2: Meetings would continue on zoom in addition to meeting in person.

Meeting Adjourned: 10:15am.
