Dated March 28 2023

Called to Order: 9:30 AM

Minutes of Last Meeting: Motion to approve the minutes of the last meeting by Barry seconded by Mike

Treasurer Sandy Raven: Nothing to report.

Sunshine Wendy Gedney: Christopher's spirits are up. He is going on a trip. His wife is undergoing chemo treatments. 

Social Bob, Mike: Lunch today at 4 Mile Pub, 8 people going after meeting.

Membership: No new members

Fresh Water:
1) Barry and Dale caught 8 fish at Durrance Lake.
2) Tim fished Sooke River and went up to the potholes. He has determined there are no fish in the river. Ron mentioned cutthroat trout are there in the fall following the salmon.

Salt Water: Peter was out Saturday. Two springs 4lb. off Saxe Point. Lost some tackle fishing close to the bottom. He lost one fish to an Otter while he was processing the fish. He thought it was safe in a bucket with a jacket over. No such luck. If they can get into the counting fence they can get your salmon out of a bucket.

FishOuts: April 12. Prospect Lake suggested. There are picnic tables at the park. Boat trailer ramp  and float available for boat access.

Fly Tying: No pattern in mind. Could be a wet fly. On Zoom Social at 9:00 fly tying 10:00am

Hatchery: Some feeding, maintenance was done on the oxygenator.

PSS: No report.

BCWF: Area One Regional Conference. Dave was in attendance. New executive was elected. Large fish and game clubs in Courtney and Port Alberni. Recreational shooters largest number of gun owners. Large facilities available for members. Dave is volunteered to one of the directors. Hunters are concerned for access to former Govt land. Dave is going to push forward that the clubs to take responsibility for access cards. Dave wanted to know what was being done for fishers. Suggested that BCWF be the contact info for fisheries notices.
Doug Banfield is the new president. Dave gave large list of fisheries concerns to president. BCWF supports private hatcheries. Dave suggested a hatchery on Salmon River. River currently has catch and release. Ron thanked Dave and stated that fishing has long been under represented at the BCWF.

Speakers Program: Today Katrina Adams is speaking on behalf of the Peninsula Streams Society. April 11 talk on underwater acoustics.

Fund Raising: Fairways card available. Please use them. Get some for your friends. It currently is our only fund raiser. We all have to eat.

Environment:
1/ Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation has a new Capacity Grants funding stream with a deadline of applying by May lst. Mick has been discussing possible applications with partner organizations for:
a/ an Elk/Beaver Lake watershed management plan implementation round table and
b/ a beaver impacts and management study for Craigflower Creek watershed. Neil Fletcher , BCWF wetlands project, is interested and Mick had a one hour MS Teams meeting with him yesterday.

2/ Peninsula Streams is running the annual Colquitz Coalition meeting in person and on Zoom tomorrow March 29 Wednesday at 6:30pm. Mick has distributed the invitation and Zoom link.

3/ Pacific Salmon Foundation has completed a hatchery effectiveness study and published an article . Mick will distribute the information at a later date.

1/ Victoria Outdoor Adventure show April 23 and 24th. Mike will be asking for volunteers to man our booth.
2/ Monday April 3 fly casting seminar at Hamsterly beach Elk lake 10:30am. All are welcome. $20.00.
3/ April 18 field trip to Cowichan River Hatchery.
