Golden Rods and Reels Fishing and Social Club

Meeting Minutes, (19 Mar 2019)

Place:  Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By:  Dave Cooke

Secretary:  Bill Thomas

Called to Order:  9:30 AM

Members Attending: 27

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed

Items Arising from the Minutes:

Treasurer:

Sunshine:

  • Art – doing well after his visit to Hospital
  • Barry – Colin is doing well, wait until Wednesday for visiting. Card is being passed around.
Social: St Patricks Day – Dinner was excellent, Music provided was great. A Good time was had by all.

Membership:

Fresh Water:

  • Robert – Robs Fly – took 15 mins before first hit.
  • Durrance Fishout – 8:00 AM start, hot dogs at Noon. $3.00 per dog.
  • Barry – Durrance Lake – Rainbow Trout - Friday lots of hits, but just one fish   -Monday – later in afternoon, 12 fish caught, up to 13-14"
  • Sandy – Friday GRR Fish Out - 2 fish with 8 anglers off dock and good snacks at Red Barn
  • Wynn – Monday – 2 off dock using Chartuese Fly, Game Warden came, don't fish without License
  • Dave Larson – Cowachin River, 1 brown. Water level in Cowachin River is scary low.
  • Mike – Fish finder used in Durrance, lots of fish
Salt Water:

  • Rob – Breakwater at Ogden Point – fellow had rigged Walker for fishing platform. Lots of large Herring in December off Admiral Bridge.
  • Ryan – some small Springs about 6 lbs
  • Esquimalt – Ron and Bob 1 Fish Bob – limit out 2 days, 5 lbs Spring
  • Good Time Dave – regular rates are now in affect: $450.00 half day and $750.00 for 4 persons
Fly Tying: Change GRR Fly tying from every Monday, to once a month, 2nd Monday of month, April, May, June, July, August, September. Next Fly Tying session is Monday, 8 April, location TBA

ACS: 30-31 March in Nanaimo (Public Advisory Fishing Board)

Library:

Legacy Fund: Disperse some of the Funds – to be discussed over next month

Gillie Club:
Dennis – fresh water equipment to use on lakes was on display
Wednesday, fishing with children in Elk Lake56, should be fun

Speakers Program:

  • Fighting over Fossil Fuels -  Today
  • 18th Century History of this area, 21 May
  • Mexico Day of Dead   June
Fund Raising:

Hatchery/Fence: Released fish – 1300 fish, in Todd Creek on Friday, 300 pit tagged.

Environment:
Mick – $142 M for Wild Salmon available from Federal Government
PICI – lots to report, will have a detailed report next week

Website: John – switched GRR Forum to NO PASSWORD

Speaker: Fighting over Fossil Foods: Understanding Pipeline Politics. This was a very interesting presentation which generated lively questions and debate.
