FLY: Darcy Gedney Salmon Special

NOTE
2020-04-18 Demo'd at GRR Fly Tying session by Dennis Gedney

METHOD

  • Start with #4 stainless hook, use two pair pliers to bend shank to simulate curved shrimp shape.
  • Tie on pink thread.
  • Pinch end of lead with pliers, tie on at front of hook, wrap thread flat against shank, crimp lead at back, wrap end of lead with thread, cut off excess thread.
  • Wrap thread forward, apply couple half hitches.
  • Straighten fly by pinching lead with pliers to create flat surface which increases hump and when going through water, it makes fly run upside down rocking which attracts salmon.
  • Whip finish cut off excess, saturate whole fly body with head cement (so that salmon doesn't chew apart) and let set. Meanwhile tie several more bodies.
  • Tie on pink thread at end of shank, and tie on Pink UV Reflective Chenille, wrap further back down send.
  • Resaturate body with head cement, wrap thread to front, wrap chenille up shank to bend eye, tie off and cut off excess.
  • Wrap thread several times at head.
  • For vein, use several green flashabou, tie on at head, several thread wraps to build head, tie back spreading out flashabou, whip finish at end of shank, cut off thread.
  • cut off tail flashabou length to about length of shank.
  • Head cement across back flashabou, and around whip finish.
OPTION

  • Tie on one yellow and one pink piece uv reflective fishing reel backing, flare out ends with needle, cut off length to shank.
COMMENTS

  • Dennis Gedney uses at Sooke River for Chum.
  • Flies take a lot beating thus reason for lots of head cement.
  • Fly used mainly for shore salmon fishing.
  • Always sharpen hook so that looks like chisel to dig into fish vs cutting fish, normally hook on lip.
  • Always check tippet for damage with thumb and finger close to hook after each strike.
