MATERIALS

  • Hook: #10 to #14 Streamer - 3x long
  • Thread: 8/0 Tan
  • Rib: Fine Copper Wire
  • Tail: Wood Duck - Can sub Natural Teal Flank
  • Body: Tan Hare's Ear - Can sub Rusty Muskrat Dubbing
  • Wing Case: Wood Dick - Can sub Brown Mallard Flank
  • Thorax: Peacock Herl
  • Hackle: Partridge
METHOD

  • Tie on thread.
  • For tail, measure mallard barbs, tie on at end of shank and wrap up onto shank.
  • Lay fine copper rib on far side and wrap on with thread.
  • For body, wrap dubbing around thread then dubbing-thread wrap up shank to 1/4" behind eye (to leave room for thorax), not too thick as body is coming out of shuck.
  • Wrap wire in opposite direction to segment body, snip off excess.
  • For wing case, strip off side, and tie down behind eye.
  • For thorax, use few strands peacock hurl, tie on by butt end at front of hook. Wrap thread forward, wrap here forward to build up thorax to twice thickness of body. Tie on and cut off excess.
  • Pull wing case over top of thorax and tie on at front leaving small space for legs.
  • For legs strip fuzz off Partridge and side barbs off non-curved side, tie on at head with curve facing away, cut off tip excess. Using hackle pliers, grab stem and wrap around head while stroking fibres out of way to back. Pull all fibres back with fingers and wrap thread around front of shank to make small head.
  • Whip finish, cut off thread, apply head cement.
