FLY: Hares Ear Mayfly Nymph

COMMENTS

  • If you don't have a bunny face, use pheasant tail for tail
  • And dark brown hares ear dubbing to thorax.
  • Fish on light tippet with Uni-Knot/Duncan Loop so that loose, and when fish strikes knot synchs down.
MATERIAL

  • Hook: Hanak H200BL #10 Wet Fly heavy wire.
  • Bead: 1/8" Gold weighted
  • Thread: Brown 6/0
  • Tail: Hares Mask Fibres
  • Abdomen: Hares ear dubbing  tan or light brown
  • Wing Case: Pheasant Tail Fibres
  • Wire: Thin Copper.
  • Thorax: Hares Mask fur chopped up
METHOD

  • Bead on hook, hook on vice.
  • Tie on thread behind bead down shank, trim off excess thread.
  • 3" wire, stick end into bead, tie wire on far side of shank and wrap on to bend.
  • Fur on mask is different length and colours, for tail cut off chunk of guard hairs and stroke out fluff to clean, measure tail length to match length of shank, tie on at end of shank.
  • Collect fluff and mix with fingers, with longer strands cut up with scissors, pull and mix by hand.
  • Thorax: Use mixed fluff as dubbing, squeeze small amount on thread and push up to hook, wrap thread-dubbing around shank, overwrap as going forward to build up tapered body, add more dubbing as required, stop half way up shank.
  • Wrap wire around thread-dubbing to create ribs, wrap several wraps in from to abdomen for weight.
  • Wing Case: Take pheasant tail, spread barbs on dark side of stem and cut off 1/4" from stem. Tie on behind bead on top of shank with barb ends to back of hook, trim off excess in front.
  • Take rabbit fur and thickly wrap as dubbing around thread, wrap on in front of thorax
  • Fold pheasant tail over Wing Case, tie on behind bead, trim off excess.
  • Couple more wraps behind bead, whip finish, cut off thread, head cement.
  • Velcro tool to rough up
