GOLDEN RODS AND REELS - WEEKLY MEETING MINUTES
October 20, 2020

LOCATION: Zoom Videoconference.

ATTENDANCE: 18 Members, no Guests.

CONVENED: 9:30 am.

MINUTES: Adopted from Oct 13, 2020.

ITEMS ARISING FROM MINUTES: None.

TREASURER'S REPORT (JohnF): Report issued via Chat email account.

MEMBERSHIP (JohnF): Annual Membership Fees due in November, please send funds via Interac eTransfer to Treasurer@GoldenRodsandReels.com or cheques. Approved Fees same as last year on website's Homepage, will resend email on annual dues and Interac eTransfer.

SUNSHINE REPORT (Vacant): Discussion.

SOCIAL (Vacant): DaveC visited Goldstream, salmon spawning but covered area taped off.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORTS (RonD):
1) BobC: On Cowichan River Saturday, water high so minimal spots and many anglers. Tried several fly patterns, no hits, but salmon rising in river.
2) DennisG: Sooke River, water flowing fast, good salmon fly fishing.
3) GordK: Sooke River, fly fishing, packed with anglers, parking hard to get.
4) DaveC: Sooke River, salmon still silver/fresh.
5) PatP: Sewage spill below Durrance Lake did not lead into creek. MikeC said cleanup trucks gone, don't think problem.

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS:
1) JohnP: Gear fished at Billings Spit Monday, 7 gear fishers, no-one caught or strike.
2) RonD: Minimal action on ocean.

FLY TYING MEETING (DaveR): Weekly Zoom meetings ongoing on Saturdays, see website > Calendar. BarryF has lots of gear to give away.

FUND RAISING: DennisG sold gathered lead.

VOLUNTEERING (BillT):
1) Colquitz River Fence (TonyO): 116 salmon todate, met at fence last Thursday at several otters feeding.
2) Goldstream Hatchery (BillT): Taking brood stock, over last 2 days, a total of 119 fish, bulk chum with 4 coho and 3 chinook.

SPEAKER PROGRAM (BobC): Next meeting will have speaker at 10:15am on Victoria Harbour Heroes. Dave C talked with Island Outfitter's Ian, too busy right now to give talk.

LEGACY FUND (BarryF): No update.

CONSERVATION REPORT (MickC):
1) Once BC election over should get more updates.
2) Elk/Beaver Lake oxygenation progressing.

AMALGAMATED CONSERVATION SOCIETY (BillT): No report.

WEBSITE (JohnP): Check if BarryF on Executive@GoldenRodsandReels.com distribution email. To reset meeting link to try and exclude having to wait to enter.

GILLIE REPORT (DennisG): No report.

LIBRARY REPORT (ColinC): No report.

NEW BUSINESS:
1) JohnF: Picked up more Fairway & Thrifty's Cards.
2) JohnF: Talked with Tracy at Silver Threads Meeting Hall (limit 8 people, upstairs may be a little more), no rent payable (for any user group). Hampton facility available and will hold over 20, will evaluate closer to January of hybrid Face-2-Face meeting & Zoom.
3) JohnF: Silver Threads using our $150 shelving and library cart, has agreed to replace when re-use facilities.
4) JohnF: Silver Threads has poor parking, re-asked if they could negotiate fees for Royal Park parking lot.
5) Discussion on unrolling from BCWF as significant large % of annual expenses. Agreed that strong advocate for freshwater fishing and that get BC Outdoors Magazine, and insurance.
6) Discussion on spey fly casting group lessons. Option paid via Ian, option competition for target/distance.
7) BarryF has 4 boxes of ~100 GRR gift mugs/coffee takeaway containers for speakers.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday October 27 meeting Zoom followed by Presentation.
