Golden Rods and Reels Fishing and Social Club

Meeting Minutes, (3 April 2018)

Place: Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By: Robert McConnell

Secretary: Bill Thomas

Called to Order: 9:34 AM

Members Attending: 28

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed with addition of request for consideration of making the club a registered society.

Items Arising from the Minutes:

Treasurer: John put coffee sign up, $1.50 a cup. We are in good financial shape. Anyone who wishes info on monthly Treasurers report, contact John.

Sunshine: We are healthy as far as we know. Letter of Thanks from The Humphries

Social: Sandy R: Apr 26, chili cook out at Elk Lake. 4 new chili cooks this year. Food starts at noon. Bring salad or dessert, chair, plates and cups and utensils. Voting will be by coin, as usual. No coins smaller than quarters, and each coin, regardless of value, equals one vote for the best chili. Fish out also in morning.

Membership: Membership drive: Forward the newsletter to friends and contacts. Put on Facebook page, if you can.

Fresh Water:

  • Barry: Sandy and Barry were at Durrance, both caught fish.
  • Barry found lots of wind but no interested fish in Prospect.
  • On Saturday, Bill and Barry caught fish in Durrance, and Lev hooked his first trout, briefly.
  • Dennis on Elk Lake last week, caught 2 fish, trolling at 18 feet with Wee Tad plugs.
  • Dave has a friend who's selling an 8-foot aluminum jon boat with electric motor and depth sounder. Contact Dave if interested.

Salt Water: 4 nights, three days fishing all found, $1500 per person at Nootka Sound Lodge. Contact Peter if interested in setting up a group for this summer.

Legacy Fund:

Gillie Club: Dennis: Sign-up sheet for Buttle Lake, May and Sept. Water level in Buttle Lake is low, water is cold, snow forecast every day for next 2 weeks. Sandy Point, sign-up sheet for those interested in setting up a trip for June. There are rental boats and guides available. Cabins, campers available for rent. Cluxewe fishing in August: Any questions, contact Dennis.

Environment:

  • Significant loss of trees (Garry Oak, Trembling Aspen). Saanich has received some funds from provincial government for loss of trees, more expected.
  • Lights on new Johnson Street bridge will cause problems for migrating fish over a much longer period than the city is anticipating.
  • Some talk of culling seals to protect salmon, particularly chinook.
