Golden Rods and Reels Fishing and Social Club

Meeting Minutes, (24 April 2018)

Place: Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By: Robert McConnell

Secretary: Bill Thomas

Called to Order: 9:33 AM
Opened with a minute of silence for the Toronto van attack casualties.

Members Attending: 28 members. New member Mike Corry: Fished all his life.

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as amended.

Items Arising from the Minutes:

Treasurer:

Sunshine:

  • Helen Wells is not feeling well.
  • Ray and Shirley Wallis and Jack Milner are all doing well.
  • Frank is feeling poorly from chemotherapy.
  • Celebration of Life for Clive in CPO Mess, this Saturday 28 April, 1:30-4:30.
Social: Reminder chili cook-out and fish-out this Thursday, 27 Apr, bring cutlery, chairs and bowls, quarters and an appetite.

Membership: Membership drive is ongoing. The Rack Cards are a success with many members carrying them when they fish.

Fresh Water:

  • Barry on Durrance Lake, last Tuesday, 2 Trout.
  • Jim on Durrance yesterday, lots of fish on dry flies.
  • John P. reported first time in belly boat on Durrance, 2 fish, a trout and bass.
  • ]Ron gave advice on keeping hat on head and reel in line before you put motor in reverse.
  • Langford was slow yesterday.
  • Dennis on Elk Lake, last Thursday, 22 feet, 2 fish.
  • Bill, Thetis 15 strikes, 1 in boat, 4 to boat. 1000 8-10- inch rainbow trout put in Thetis on Monday. Calabaetis hatch this week.
  • With warm weather expected a black hatch is a possibility – a small hook dressed with black is the answer.
  • Sandy and Ron planning a trip to Peter Hope Lake, 22 May-1 Jun. Anybody interested can join in.
Salt Water:

  • John P. caught 16 small herring for breakfast off the Craigflower bridge.
  • Ron was prawning in Brentwood Bay, over 200 plus many potentially squat lobster.
ACS:

Library: Colin brought salt water gear in for sale, donations to club please.

Legacy Fund:

Gillie Club: Dennis, fishing Elk Lake Wednesday/Thursday this week. winds are 15 KPH. Buttle Buttle Lake report, water is low. Bring hip waders to get to your boat. To check weather go to Strathcona Park. All tributaries are available to fish except main one. Catch and release for tributaries.

Speakers Program: May 1: Regular and executive meeting – no speaker.

Fund Raising:

Hatchery: AGM was held on 18 April at Esquimalt Anglers. Well and attended and many good presentations.

New Business:

  • Last meeting this season is 26 June.
  • It was suggested that $500.00 be given for research into  bycatch by commercial fishing. To be discussed at executive meeting.
  • Rent this year is same as last year for Silver Threads facility.
