At GRR 2018-0911 Weekly Meeting, Member Dennis Gedney held a small presentation on fishing the Sooke River. John Pierce notes:

  • Photo #1: General view of Dennis with fly fishing material layout.
  • Photo #2: Jim MacDonald's Guide - Sooke River Info.
  • Photo #3: Dennis's pre-made heavy sinking tips Chum Salmon, of various lengths for various river current speeds with easy connect loops and pre-tied looped at one end tippets to easily change in stream.
  • Photo #4: Tippet material, use at least 15 lb as fish's teeth are more exposed close to mating, so can be more aggressive against other males.
  • Photo #5: Dennis's "Disco Den" flies ready to go!
  • Photo #6: Dennis's "Disco Den" fly making steps, without or with red plastic bead.
  • Photo #7: Dennis's "Disco Den" with looped tippet attached. Also using #4 Circle Hook which tends not to hang up or foul hook, but if using, don't pull immediate on strike, need to let fish take it and when fish turns, hooks on side of mouth.
  • Photo #8: Dennis's fly using fly line backing material and UV strips.
  • Photo #9: Dennis's "Dennis Jr" long flies for fast stripping when others flies don't work. Story is that in a school of Pinks, largest will strike this fly.
  • Photo #10: Ira Pratt's Russia famous pink & silver "Ira Flies".
  • Photo #11: Jim MacDonald's Guide - Chum Fishing On Sooke River page 1of2.
