Meeting Minutes, (18 Sept 2018)

Place:  Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Called to Order:  9:30 AM

Members Attending:  20 + Guest Sven

Minutes of Last Meeting:  Adopted as distributed

Items Arising from the Minutes:

  • Ron – one idea from each member on Fishing Topics or mini workshops to Ron please.
  • Elk Lake Rowers want to make Elk Lake a National Rowing Headquarters. Rob will make a presentation to CRD Parks committee. We have serious concerns and not enough information yet.

Social: 4 October, Pot Luck at Silver Threads, 5:30 PM

Membership:

Fresh Water: Durrance Lake, Barry and Colin, 2lb trout and some small bass.

Salt Water:

  • Ryan, lots of wild coho, only 3 hatchery keepers, Otter Point, 120' deep, 4-8 lbs
  • Peter and John with Good Time Dave, boated 4 wild and 4 hatchery. Fishing well off Beechy Head. Good coho fishing generally at this time.
  • Peter – Poet Nook in Bamfield this summer, good fishing, but seals and sea lions taking a lot of hooked salmon, usually with terminal tackle as well.
  • Ron and Sandy – Sooke – took 7 hours to get back to Victoria because of accident and road closure, no fish at Sooke River estuary.
  • Dave reported how good Lampson Reels are at servicing their product.
  • Potential fishing closures in local waters are becoming a great concern. Ron will take lead on it.

Legacy Fund:

Gillie Club:  Dennis, 2 Oct, seminar on Sooke River chum fishing. He has a spare bottle of an ultra violet spray to use on flies or lures. Mrs. Stewart's Blueing Bleach, use on herring or anchovies to make them more reflective.

Speakers Program: Sept 25: Melissa Nottingham, Community Advisor, Fisheries and Oceans Canada: "Salmonid Enhancement Program and Fish Hatcheries"

Fund Raising:

Hatchery: The fish fence has been installed.

Environment:

  • Gorge Waterway Initiative agenda – eel-grass, Johnson Bridge lighting, abandoned boats, etc.
  • PICI – proceeding apace, literature review 60% done, angler survey complete and ready for use.

New Business:

  • Executive Positions will be open this year, please consider running.
  • Fly Casting Clinic – Ian Muirhead in fall if interested. Approximately $20-30 per person.
  • Fly tying with Haig Brown 19 May 2018 – Clousers Minnow and other eyed flies.
  • Annual dues are due!!!  $60 for individual membership, $90 for couples.

Speaker:  John Roe, founder of the Veins of Life society and current Esquimalt mayoralty candidate, gave a lively talk on his long-standing efforts to bring attention to pollution problems in local waterways.
