PACIFIC SALMON TYPES

NOTES: Salmon will often stage on beach at start of estuary and will instinctively "run" upstream when have best chances vs predators. Ideal run times are after big rainfall, and/or incoming tide, especially towards end of ring tide.

RULE OF THUMBS

  • On Even years, normally come around north end of Vancouver Island and work way to S end. On Odd years, reverse and come around south end.
  • Not all rivers get all runs.
  • Major Pink run is odd years, minor is even.
SOCKEYE (RED IN USA)
DESCRIPTION: Body resembles the shape of a torpedo with a snubbed nose. Very precise scales in a very nice pattern. Average 2.5 kg.
RUN: Around June/Early July.
FLIES: Small red fly, strip fast.
EATING: An oilier fish with deep red flesh, sockeye salmon also high in heart-healthy omega-3s but has a stronger flavour and stands up well to grilling.

PINK (HUMPY IN USA)
DESCRIPTION: Lower jaw will most likely be black, upper jaw will have whites and other colours that will help distinguish it from Chinook. In ocean like to jump out of water and land on side.
RUN: July/August, 2-3 weeks run then remaining fish mungy.
CATCHING: Fun, especially on lighter rod as feisty and like to jump.
FLIES: Not big, "blue flies for fresh Pinks, pink flies for others", "pink flies for pink, sometime blue flies in afternoon".
EATING: Cheaper salmon, soft oily meat, great bbq or smoke cured, does not freeze well.

CHUM (DOG IN USA)
DESCRIPTION: Pupil is very large in comparison with the iris and is much bigger than the pupil of other salmon types. Side will have stripes that run from dorsal to belly (tiger style). Like to jump in saltwater, sometimes in semicircle.
RUN: Around Sept.
FLIES: Jim MacDonald says Chum will take about any coloured fly as long as flashy.
CATCHING: Fun lots larger than Pinks and good fight.
EATING: Cheaper salmon, best smoking salmon.

COHO (SILVER IN USA)
DESCRIPTION: Lower gum line exactly where the teeth protrude will be white, like a white line. Note, some pinks will have white toward the back of the jaw, but Coho have white line along the entire set of bottom teeth. In ocean like to jump out of water and land vertical. Average 3.0 kg.
RUN: Mid Aug/Dec.
FLIES: Very aggressive, will swim fast on surface for fly/bait, then big strike.
EATING: Milder and often lighter in colour.

CHINOOK AKA SPRING & TYEE (KING IN USA)
DESCRIPTION: Completely black mouth (looks like black paintball exploded in the salmon's mouth), does not jump in saltwater only sometimes role, thus perspicuity, may not see them but could be lots. Chinooks return to their river several months before spawning ocean-bright and with enough fat reserves to maintain them until they spawn in September. They are the strongest salmonids averaging 14 to 25 pounds, and can exceed 40 pounds.
RUN: Mid Sep/Mid Nov.
FLIES:
EATING: Largest (and often most expensive), is prized for its high fat content and buttery texture and is rich in omega-3s.
