Meeting Minutes, (29 Oct 2019)

Called to Order:  9:30 AM

Members Attending: 25 plus 2 guests

Goldstream Park Hot Dogs and Soup – Thursday, 14 Nov at 11:00 AM, Soup provided, pot luck otherwise. Bring your own Crockery and Cutlery
Xmas Lunch – 3 Dec  - Cedar Hill Golf Course – details to follow

Membership: 1 new member last week

Fresh Water:
Ryan – Cowachin Lake – 2 Cut Throat, Prospect – 7 fish Sunday
Jim M – fishing hats available.  Sooke River – 7:30 AM no fish, showed fly he uses, hook breaks easily, Chum are released, no problem.  A good day, when you say " next Fish I go home".
Sooke River – lower part, fresh fish – on Sunday

Really slow these days

Fly Tying:
Dave – Commonwealth Pool, tomorrow, Wednesday 10:00 AM, Fly Tying with Haig Brown.

Dennis – Reel sold, $100.00 for Legacy Fund. Donate lead please. Reel made from Bakelite available. If you find a lure you like, Dennis will put hook on it. Any information, Dennis is always available after meeting.

Fund Raising:

Hatchery/Fence:
Over 250 Coho handled at fence as of Friday. Half our Coho Brood Stock taken. Chum started to come into Goldsteam last Thursday, we took some ripe females on Friday and did an egg take. We already have all the eggs needed for the 105 Schools who hatch fry.
We introduced 17 Teachers from District 61 to the Hatchery on Friday. They remarked it was a great PD day for them.
Colquitz Fence – we wll be starting GRR Fence counting this Thursday, 9:30 am.

Environment:
Bill - CRD Presentation - Shoreline Restoration – U of W Professor Jason Tofts – Restoring shoreline and beaches for Juvenile Salmon, 5-7 years before significant improvements.
Removal of Armoured Shoreline – in Puget Sound, this has increased in the last 5 years.
Driving down Gorge today, noticed how much of Gorge Shoreline is Armoured as is Victoria Harbour.

Ban Herring Fishery – Club should back Organizations that support this plan, To be discussed

Dave – Artfishal – presentation on Fish Farming,  Justin Trudeau stated "Shut Down Open Fish Farming"
Mick – felt it was a balanced presentation. Reduce wild stock genetics.
A young crowd attended movie.

Mick – Talk with Jill Robinson – New Data Logger – better water quality data on Colquitz system
CRD – more exploration on Beaver Lake,  closer on Aeration
Beaver Dam on Thetis Lake – dam needs leveller, talked with Jill
PICI – 80% of work is completed. WFT is applying for $50,000.00 Grant
Herring Ban – lots of money and effort has been applied
