Meeting Minutes, (6 March 2018)

Place: Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Called to Order: 9:37 AM

Members Attending: 26 + 1 guest, Tim Weckend.

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed

Items Arising from the Minutes:

  • John Francis is looking for pictures of recent social events for the newsletter.
  • Clive's Celebration of Life will be at the CPO mess 28 April at 1:00 PM.
  • Sydney Anglers not doing anything for Clive, but some individuals will contribute to any memorial we might be involved in.

Treasurer: Report was given. We are in good shape. Contact John Francis for details.

Sunshine: Welcome back to Ryan.

Social: GRR St Patrick's Day Pot Luck, on 15 March, 5:00 PM at Silver Threads. Green food and clothing.

Membership:

Fresh Water:

  • Barry, at Durrance Lake, had nothing to brag about. Jim, who doesn't brag, caught a number of fish in Durrance, using a clear line, a type 3 sink, trolling with March Brown, fishing deep. The bite, as usual, started at 11:00 AM and lasted for half an hour.
  • GRR fish-out, at Durrance tomorrow 7 Mar. Hot dogs will be served at 1:00 PM.

Salt Water:

  • Ron reported fishing Whirl Bay on Sunday, no fish.
  • An article on in Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Magazine cited new research by American fisheries biologists that showed that sea lions and seals are seriously depleting Chinook salmon stocks.
  • In BC, Chinook fishing will be curtailed in some way this year. DFO is currently proposing a closure from Sheringham Point to Port Renfrew, as well as areas off Pender and Saturna.
  • DFO has closed the commercial herring fishery in the Bella Bella area in response to complaints from the Heiltsuk First Nation.

  • Dennis is still taking sign-ups for Buttle Lake in May.
  • Dennis will meet with Ward Bond of Island Outfitters and will report back with possible packages for a fishing/camping trip to the Cowichan River later this spring.

Speakers Program:

  • 14 Mar - Fly Tying
  • 20 Mar – Mick has invited a number of visitors to hear Jim Roberts and Nina Barton on "Elk and Beaver Lake Fish Inventory".

Fund Raising:

Hatchery: Smolt clipping is almost finished; the main activity is feeding smolts prior to their release over the next few months.
