GRR Meeting Minutes January 28, 2025

President Bill Thomas called meeting to order at 10:00 am

Minutes from last weeks meeting were accepted, moved by Ian Cameron and seconded by Rick Cohen

Members in attendance: Mike Galbraith Rich Greenhorn Ken Evans Lyle Freeman Ira Pratt John Pierce Colin Cuddwhich Ian Cameron Barry Freeman Christopher Wade Bill Thomas Peter Laughren Tim Witoski Ted Leaker Wayne Lee Sandy McElroy Jens Kristensen Winston Jackson Peter Walleweg Dave Robinson Jim Scott Kobus Erasmus Pierre Malo Rick Cohen Gary Floratin Ryan A. Ron Estey Tony Otten Bob Comford Florin Sabac Ray Dykstra

Zoom attendees: Dave Cooke Mohamed Docrat Brian Canfield Michael Corry Denis Gedney John Francis

Items arising from minutes: Bill raised Tony's suggestion that GRR increase annual dues by $10 to be used as membership in PSS for all GRR members. It was suggested that our membership be encouraged to join PSS but not to have it morphed into GRR membership dues.

Social: Mike Galbraith has Chinese New Year Dim sum lunch planned for January 29 at Don Mee's and approximately 26 members are attending

Fresh Water: Dale was not in attendance. Tim Witoski reported that he fished Monday on the lower Cowichan River with no luck, saw 3 drift boats pass, one reported get a rainbow otherwise slow. Tim also fished while up in Whistler and got 1 bull trout

Saltwater: Peter Laughren noted that fishing is generally slow off Sooke similar along waterfront. Small hoochies down near the bottom appear to be the best bet.

Fish Out: Prospect Lake Thursday February 27th with hotdogs at the park with the swings at 12:00 noon

Fly Tying: Dave Robinson will be tying a spider fly and Florin will be tying a cut throat fly. This past weeks session was well attended on Zoom

Hatchery: Bill Thomas reported that the water temperature is very low and as a result the fish are at a very low activity / feeding level. The eggs at turning to Alvin and will soon be ponded. Early March is good for Steelhead fishing as Chum fry are released and this draws in the Steelhead.

BCWF: Dave Cooke noted that the Region 1 AGM is scheduled for March 15/16 and BCWF meeting is set for April 24-26 in Dawson Creek. Dave encouraged anyone with younger kids to consider the event in Comox July 14-18 as there are a number of interactive activities for young outdoors focused kids to try.

Gillie: Dennis Gedney asked Dave Cooke about reservations up in Campbell River for the salmon run. Dave will look into it but doesn't anticipate an issue in getting a price break at the Riverside Motel, similar to last year. Mid July and after is best for Pinks and August on for Coho as a rule of thumb.

Website: John Pierce has updated the fly tying videos and posted the meetings minutes.

PSS: Tony Otten reported that they found both Sand Lace and Surf Smelt on the north end of Willows beach which is a positive sign!

Outdoor Show: Mike Galbraith said things are on schedule for show April 25,26,27 but they are still looking for a taxidermy trout for display.

Meeting Terminated approximately 10:45 am accepted by Rick Cohen and seconded by Barry Freeman

Following the meeting Lyle Freeman gave us a great talk on the "History of Whaling on the Pacific Coast"
