Meeting Minutes, (13 March 2018)

Place: Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By: Robert McConnell

Secretary: Bill Thomas

Called to Order: 9:30 AM

Members Attending: 28

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed

Items Arising from the Minutes:

Treasurer:

Sunshine: All is well.

Social: Mar 15 St Pats Day, dinner at 5:30, bring your own dishes, $2.00.

Membership:

Fresh Water:

  • Fish-out in Durrance Lake: Fish caught, hot dogs were excellent, Dale checked out nymphs, water temp and PFD (PFD worked, water was cold).
  • Jim caught lots of fish, March Brown and Pumpkin Head were catching. Sunday Langford Lake no fish.
  • Ron at Cowichan River, no fish.

Salt Water: Ryan on 232 plug caught 13 lb Chinook.

ACS:

  • Brian attended meeting. Lights on new Johnson Street Bridge could be a danger to salmon. Dave to address this matter in meeting with city staff.
  • Killer whales and Salmon fishing closures were discussed. Sydney Anglers to submit report to government.
  • Campbell River showed larger fish last fall, apparently as a result of efforts at the local hatchery.
  • Suggested that a speaker on hatchery vs wild salmon be sought.  Peter McCully was suggested. Rob to follow up.
  • Forage stocks should be maintained. Recent herring returns have been spotty in some areas and large in others.

Library:

Newsletter: Pictures of fish-out on forum for newsletter.

Legacy Fund:

Gillie Club: Still setting up with Ward Bond (Cowichan River fishing). Buttle lake, 15 signed up.

Speakers Program: March 20: Fish inventory survey from Elk Lake will be presented. Members are encouraged to attend.

Fund Raising:

Hatchery: New salmon are hatching and old ones (smolts) are growing.

Environment/Conservation: Bill is attending Region 1 BCWF conference.

Website:

New Business: Rack cards are now available for distribution. Membership drive will be on agenda for the next few weeks. Roger is to manage card distribution. Members are encouraged to distribute. Legion halls, doctors' and dentists' offices, libraries, rec centres, and any groups you attend are suggested locations.
