Meeting Minutes, (27 March 2018)

Place: Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By: Robert McConnell

Called to Order: 9:30 AM

Members Attending: 30 + Lev

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed

Items Arising from the Minutes: Letter from Peninsula Streams thanking us for donation of $1000.00.

Treasurer:

Sunshine: Art's cataract surgery is completed and he is healthy.

Social: Elk Lake Chili and Fish-Out on April 26; 11:30 AM for chili.

Membership: Membership drive. Members are our best marketing tool: Pick up rack cards from Roger and carry with you when fishing and in vehicle. 

Fresh Water Report:

  • Barry reported 6 trout in Prospect Lake last week.
  • Jim reported Durrance, fishing March Brown: a lot of fish, once he moved down to a size 12.
  • Winston – invited GRR members to a Cowichan River Skunkathon, meet at Tim Hortons on Millstream Road at 8:00 AM Thursday.  Stoltz campground at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM sausages and coffee.
  • May 22, Sandy and Ron planning to go up to Peterhope Lake.
  • Elk Lake Derby: 14 April 2018, $25 per adult and $10 per child. Every child gets a prize. A 12" Lowe boat with a 6 HP motor is the draw prize

Salt Water Report: Big halibut are being caught at 600 feet.

Newsletter: John reported on newsletter, looking for photos for Chinese Lunch, St Pats Dinner Pot Luck, Xmas Lunch and Durrance fish-out.

Legacy Fund:

Gillie Club: Dennis reminded people of Buttle Lake for September. Cluxewe sign up will be starting soon.

Speakers Program:

  • April 3 – regular and executive meeting, no speaker.
  • Mick: Nina and Jim appreciated our interest in their Elk Lake fish survey, which they reported on at the last meeting.
  • Need fishing topic for April 10.

Environment:

  • Gorge waterway initiative, interesting speakers, Esquimalt Anglers reported on Craigflower fence and Colquitz fence.
  • Lighting on new Johnson Street Bridge, some discussion, update to come, Dave is following up. The problem is the blue lighting which attracts smolts and predators.
  • McKenzie Interchange problems, destruction of 500 trees, some meetings and tours have been done.
  • Artificial tree to be erected at Ogden Point to provide a place for eagles to nest and chase away the gulls from their roof-top rookery. The news was greeted with laughter.

Speaker: UVic professor Trevor Hancock spoke eloquently on the benefits of spending time in nature, and Morris dancing.
