Meeting Minutes, (01 May 2018)

Place: Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By: Robert McConnell

Secretary: Bill Thomas

Called to Order: 9:30 AM

Members Attending: 23

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed

Items Arising from the Minutes: Executive Meeting Minutes – foster newer members to take future executive positions.

Treasurer: John Francis presented the report for the first half of the fiscal year. The bottom line is about $1,000 below budget, mainly because a shortfall in Thrifty Smile Card returns. Members are urged to use the cards and get some from John Francis for family and friends.

Sunshine: Frank is chipper and in good spirits.

Social: No report

Membership: Bring a Friend to a Meeting, 12 Jun with open house.

Fresh Water:

  • Bill at Thetis Lake, great fishing using a beaded leech and woolly bugger.
  • Jim and John, Langford Lake, fish are still there.
  • Colin, Durrance Lake, 2 fish; Sandy catching on dry flies.
  • Dale, Prospect, lots of fish just to the right of boat Launch.
  • Rob and Ryan, Elk Lake, 8.5 lb carp and 7 trout including a cutthroat. There was a small discussion on cutthroat, sea-run and others. Jim will explore info on cutthroat.
  • Dave had good fishing on the Cowichan River, but warned that the fish stop biting when the sun hits the water, so early morning and evening are now the prime times.
Salt Water: Cyril has been fishing the Oak Bay flats recently, 3 Salmon, 9-12 lbs.

Gillie Club: Dennis – Buttle Lake is starting this coming weekend – water level low, weather expected to be sunny, daytime temps 9-15, nighttime could be chilly.

Speakers Program: May 15 No meeting because of Buttle Lake trip.

Environment:

  • Lower Colquitz is still having problems with the McKenzie Interchange construction, but the Ministry of Transport seems to be getting more open and amenable.
  • Mick has arranged an Elk Lake tour for key CRD staffers Jodie and Nicole; snot weed will be part of the agenda.
  • Peninsula Streams AGM this Saturday: 3 pm at Brentwood Bay Lodge.
  • City of Victoria has hired a consultant to look at impact of new bridge lights on migrating fish; Mick will follow up.
  • Commercial salmon fishing bycatch: World Fisheries Trust, WWF and others looking at this issue.
  • Royal Oak Golf Course: land would be good for farmers markets and allotment gardens, but new owner wants to get the property out of the Agricultural Land Reserve so he can put in a housing development.
