Golden Rods and Reels Fishing and Social Club

Meeting Minutes, (30 Oct 2018)

Place: Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By: Robert McConnell

Robert: The microphone and speaker are not working and out of stock. We require a set up. A decision will be made at next week's executive meeting.

Secretary: Bill Thomas

Called to Order: 9:30 AM

Members Attending: 23 + visitor Bob Enwright

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed

Items Arising from the Minutes: Nil

Treasurer: A cheque for $42.90 from Fairway Market. Cheques totallying $400 donated to club from family members of Frank Szarkowicz. A thank-you note will be sent.

Sunshine: Bill is feeling better.

Social: 8 Nov, Soup and hot dog BBQ, Goldstream Park 11:00 AM. Bring chairs, cutlery, plates/bowls, and sides or desserts.

Membership:

Fresh Water:

  • Barry: Durrance Lake, 3 little trout.
  • Bob C: Elk Lake, several 2lb trout.
  • Brian: Prospect Lake, slow this week.
  • Jim M: make your own circle hooks.
  • Sooke: best fishing for years. Cloudy weather, dark flies; Bright weather: bright flies.
  • Sandy: Carry business cards and rack cards to give to people you meet while fishing.
  • Jim had close encounter with seal on Sooke River.
Salt Water:

  • Ryan: Spring off Constance Bank, 9 lbs.
  • Billings Spit – fish still there.

Gillie Club: Dennis: Knots by Dennis. Jim showed how to bend hooks to get a circle effect and reduce snagging in the river.

Speakers Program: Nov. 7 regular and executive meeting, no speaker.

Fund Raising:

Hatchery/Fence:

  • Fish at now arriving at the Goldstream hatchery fence.
  • Colquitz River fence, 35 fish on Saturday. GRR members encouraged to attend Colquitz Fence, Wednesday morning at 10:00 am for media show.
  • Suggestions were made of possible locations to fish in The Gorge.

  • Lighting on Johnson Street bridge is still being worked on.
  • Sidney Summit – 10 Nov 9:30-6:30
  • Presentation at UVic by nature photojournalist was excellent.

New Business:

  • It was suggested we purchase GRR shirts with embroidered crest, or shirts with logo. Will be considered further.
  • The suggestion to change the meeting start time change from 9:30 to 10:00, a straw vote was taken, defeated soundly.
