Meeting Minutes, (20 Nov 2018)

Place: Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By: Robert McConnell

Secretary: Bill Thomas

Called to Order: 9:30 AM

Members Attending: 24 members and 1 guest, Ray Christianson.

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed.

Items Arising from the Minutes:

Treasurer: Report at AGM next week.

Sunshine:

Social: Call Solange or Sandy for reservations for GRR Xmas Party, 11 Dec at Finn's restaurant, starting at 11:30 AM.

Membership:

Fresh Water:

  • Barry, John, Colin – Durrance Lake, a number of fish.
  • Brian – 15-inch rainbow in Prospect.
  • Ron found a nice campground on Sooke River above the pot-holes, could be a site for a club outing next June, with reportedly good fishing for cutthroat and rainbows.
Salt Water:

  • Ryan – 4 springs at Oak Bay flats.
  • Dave – is in the Cook Islands, fishing for bonefish on 27 Nov.
  • Roger – Winter springs, 6-8 lbs, being caught at Sooke and Whirl Bay.
  • Report by DFO, "Implementation for Managerial Measures for the Recreation Harvest of Littleneck, Manila and Butter Clams and Pacific Oysters in BC Tidal Waters": there is concern that this report is absurd in its content and threatening in reducing catch limits. The report states the DFO don't know how many clams there are, how many clams are taken or where taken!!!, but want to limit catch anyway.
Haig Brown 21 Nov – fly-tying with Ira, coho flies, CPO Mess at 7:00 PM.

Speakers Program: Nov 27: regular meeting followed by AGM and election of officers, no speaker.

Fund Raising:

Hatchery/Fence:

  • 300,000 chum and 200,000 coho eggs is the goal for Goldstream Hatchery this fall.
  • 29 Nov Thursday, 8:30, meet at CRD gate for egg take and mulligatawny soup.
  • Colquitz fence: panel was scheduled to be replaced today. We should be at fence Thursday morning, confirm tomorrow evening.
Environment:

  • Peninsula Streams Soiree at McTavish Centre in Sydney was successful. Approximately 100 attended, $25.00 per person. Over-view of projects, film on Tod Creek.
  • GWI – Update on McKenzie Interchange. Discussion on Kayak and Canoe Club Dock update, CRD ecological update.
  • Blue lights are still being assessed on new bridge.
  • Elk Lake, discussion with Jill Robinson, RFP for aeration is in progress and still open.
  • PICI is continuing to move ahead.
