Meeting Minutes, (12 Mar 2019)

Place:  Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By:  Dave Cooke

Secretary:  Bill Thomas

Called to Order:  9:30 AM

Members Attending: 29 + John Braybrook and Pat George

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed

Items Arising from the Minutes:
Age Group for Region 1 Kids Camp – 9-17 years old

Treasurer:

Sunshine:
Bill G – no change

Social:
St Patrick's Day Pot Luck – this Thursday, 5:30, bring your own cutlery

Membership:

Fresh Water:

  • Robert – 3000 in Elk Lake, 1800 in Prospect, 500 in Glen Lake, ½ lb Blackwater Rainbow Trout put in by Fresh Water Society of BC
  • Sandy – Fishing in Durrance 11:00 – 1:00 on Thursday, 14 Mar.
Salt Water:

  • Ryan – 40 lb Halibut, Trailer Park, Sooke at 280' and couple small Springs
  • John – Good Time Dave – 4 fish – 2 small returned, 1 good Coho and a Rock Fish
  • Bob – 13 lb Coho, Fleming Beach, Esquimalt Anglers. Whirl Bay, a couple of small fish
  • Pacific Salmon Foundation Fund Raiser, past Saturday evening – Great time and lots of Seafood appetizers. GRR could look at buying a table next year.
Fly Tying: Rob – hosted Monday GRR Fly Tying – tied Ray Wallace Fly, good time was had, 7 tiers.

Comments on Herring Fishery – Hornby Island Spawn, herring survive after spawning and grow bigger

Ron – Biologist from DFO, no problem commercial fishing this area, because stocks are healthy. Not a good attitude as other areas are depleted because of over Fishing.

Dave L – some attempts are being made to wrestle away some Responsibility from DFO of Management of BC Fisheries

Comments on Jordon River – 2 dams wiped salmon out the salmon run on this river

ACS: Dave – Chris Bos – knowledgeable on Salmon

Library: Dave C - Please return books

Legacy Fund: Mustard Seed will receive donation of $140.00 from GRR, Fly sale matched by GRR

Gillie Club: Dennis - Buttle Lake – low water this year & he brought in a Portable Fly-Tying Station he had constructed.

Speakers Program: Chironimid Fishing this week. Oil next week

Speaker:John Braybrook and Pat George gave a very informed and interesting talk on Fishing Tunkwa Lake.
