Golden Rods and Reels Fishing and Social Club

Meeting Minutes, (5 November 2019)

Place:  Silver Threads Centre, 2340 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC

Chaired By:  Ron Duncan

Secretary:  Bill Thomas

Called to Order:  9:30 AM

Members Attending: 19 members

Minutes of Last Meeting: Adopted as distributed. Last Meeting was chaired by John Francis last Meeting, 28 Oct 19

Items Arising from the Minutes:

Treasurer: John F – Report given, questions, contact John. Year end will be delivered in December

Sunshine: Art – John – getting better, try to get to a meeting soon

Social:
Sandy R – Next Week, 14 Nov at Goldstream Park at 11:00 AM
Bring own Crockery, cutlery and chairs

Xmas Lunch – 11:30 - $35.00 per person Cedar Hill Golf Course Note: Signed up by 26 Nov

Membership: Pay Membership by end of Novembers, $60.00 for individual, $90.00 for family, $20.00 for Associate (do not attend meeting and socials)

Fresh Water:
Barry - Durrance Lake – good fishing, 10-14" – fishing in afternoon, flies – Leeches, Royal Coachman,
Ron – Durrance - Soft Hackle flies, Set slowly at 5'
Jim – Langford Lake – Orange Booby, Balanced Leeches – No luck, some fish were caught, but not by Jim – fish close to top to catch some, larger ones are deep
Bob C – Cowichin River – pretty slow for Salmon
Cecil – Elk Lake, Booby, 2 fish

Salt Water: Cecil – 8 lbs chinook, The Gap in Oak Bay

Fly Tying: Barry Stokes – 3rd Wednesday of Nov at CPO Mess

ACS:

Library: Colin – 4 new books

Legacy Fund:
Ron – outlined process of report to be presented to Executive Committee. First Draft to be presented at Executive Meeting today. Ron posted Draft Report on GRR Chat. Comments, suggestions etc are wanted and welcomed.
Jim submitted suggestions to Ron

Gillie Club: Dennis – brought in Tackle Boxes for sale. Reel for sale. Bring in Lead for Club (weights, lures, etc.)

Hatchery/Fence:
Over 288 Coho taken at Goldstream Fence as of Friday, egg takes on Friday and Monday
Colquitz – next 5 weeks, GRR at 9:30 AM on Thursday mornings. All are welcome to help.
DFO Escapement numbers for Chum are drastically down as of Friday's Weekly Report eg: 52,000 instead of 150,000 for Cowichan, 7,000 instead of 52,000 for Goldstream

Environment:
Mick – updates – CRD requested letter for support for Application for Aeration Equipment for Elk/Beaver Lake – Draft is completed.
Final Copy PICI –  application for funds, under $100,000  was submitted by WFT to Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (SRIF) , supported by GRR
-       10 years plan for Colquitz
-       Water Quality monitoring
-       Refine & implement fish measuring
-       Enhance Habitat for fish
-       Improve public awareness and involve public in Cut Throat Trout
Jim – noted no improvements by CRD on Elk/Beaver Lake in last 6 years. Public is doing job that CRD should be!
Mick -  It was noted the CRD has hired Elk/Beaver Lake Co-ordinator, spent a good deal of money on sewage, they seem to be more committed.
It was noted that a 800 person development is scheduled for the Shore of Elk Lake!!
Bill – BCWF  Region 1 Meeting – Sunday, 1 Dec – Esquimalt Anglers – 9:00 AM GRR provide Donuts in the morning and Lunch.  Ian Bruce will be speaker at 11:00
